Canada Introduces Category-Based Selection to Express Entry System

After much anticipation, in 2023 IRCC chose to augment its Express Entry application selection system to allow for category and job-specific selection of eligible candidates.

Until now, Express Entry draws were conducted based on existing immigration programs (Federal Skilled Workers, Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Trades, etc.). Now, those waiting for an invitation in the Express Entry pool of candidates with work experience in specific in-demand categories, in addition to those with French language proficiency, will be considered. Category-based rounds of invitation add to general and program-specific rounds by inviting candidates who can help fulfill specific economic goals, as well as to promote Francophone immigration to communities outside of the province of Quebec.

For 2023, the immigration department has selected 82 occupations in Healthcare, STEM fields, Trades, Transport, and Agriculture/Agri-Trades, in addition to French speakers across a full range of occupations from “TEER 3” and above. IRCC does not disclose prior details of who will be targeted ahead of each draw, so having a valid Express Entry profile in the pool of candidates is more valuable than ever given these new opportunities for candidates. Let us assist you in providing a detailed eligibility assessment and preparing your profile.
